Spray Before You Mow: Why the Order Matters for Better Weed Control

When you’re getting a food plot ready for fall planting, it’s tempting to start with the bush hog.

The field is waist-high, weeds are everywhere, and mowing makes an immediate difference. In an hour or two, an overgrown mess can look like something you’re actually ready to plant.

But if you’re planning to spray those weeds with a post-emergent herbicide, mowing first can actually work against you.

In most cases, the better order is simple:

Spray first. Let the herbicide work. Then mow.

There’s some real plant science behind why this works better.

Herbicide Needs Something to Hit

Many of the herbicides used for food plot preparation are foliar-applied, meaning the chemical enters the plant primarily through its leaves and green stems.

When a spray droplet lands on a leaf, the herbicide begins moving through the leaf surface and into the plant. To get where it needs to go, it has to penetrate several barriers, including the waxy cuticle on the outside of the leaf.

That means leaf surface is valuable.

Think about a field full of 18-inch weeds. There’s plenty of green material there to catch your spray. Mow those same weeds down to three inches and you’ve just removed most of your target.

Less leaf area can mean less herbicide intercepted and absorbed. Extension recommendations commonly advise against mowing immediately before foliar herbicide applications for exactly this reason.

Systemic Herbicides Have to Move Through the Plant

The second reason to spray before mowing is even more important when dealing with perennial weeds.

Some herbicides are primarily contact herbicides. They damage the plant tissue that receives the spray. Others are systemic, meaning they’re absorbed and then transported to other parts of the plant.

Glyphosate is a familiar example. After being absorbed through foliage, it can move through the plant into actively growing tissues, including underground portions. USDA research notes that a substantial portion of absorbed glyphosate can move from treated leaves toward root and shoot growing points.

That’s important because killing what you can see isn’t always the same thing as killing the weed.

A perennial weed may have a substantial root system, crown, rhizome, or other underground structure storing enough energy to regrow. If you simply mow the top off, you haven't necessarily eliminated the plant.

A systemic herbicide gives you an opportunity to attack the entire plant instead.

Why Mowing First Can Hurt Your Results

Mowing creates two problems at once.

First, you remove much of the foliage that would have caught the herbicide.

Second, you stress the plant.

Healthy, actively growing weeds generally absorb and translocate systemic herbicides better than stressed plants. Mowing forces a plant into recovery mode, and recently cut weeds may need time to produce enough new foliage before they're once again good targets for a foliar spray.

This explains something a lot of land managers have probably seen firsthand.

You mow a weedy area, spray what’s left, and everything looks great for a while. Then a couple weeks later, green shoots start popping right back up.

You knocked the weeds down.

You didn't necessarily kill them.

Give the Spray Time to Work

Spraying before mowing only works if you give the herbicide enough time to do its job.

Don’t spray a field in the morning and bush hog it that afternoon.

Systemic herbicides need time for absorption and movement through the plant. Glyphosate, for example, may continue translocating for roughly 48–72 hours after application, and visible symptoms can take a week or longer to fully develop.

The exact waiting period depends on the herbicide, weed species, weather, application rate, and other factors, so always follow the product label for mowing, rainfastness, application rates, and planting restrictions.

If the label allows it, giving weeds several days to absorb and move the herbicide before mowing can make a significant difference.

Coverage Matters Too

Of course, spraying first doesn't automatically guarantee good weed control.

You still need adequate coverage.

Food plot preparation doesn't have to be complicated. But doing things in the right order can save you from fighting the same weeds again a few weeks later.

When you're dealing with established vegetation, think:

Spray → Wait → Mow → Prepare → Plant

Let the weeds grow enough to give you a good spray target. Use the appropriate herbicide according to its label. Give it enough time to be absorbed and move through the plant. Then come back with the mower and start preparing your seedbed.

It might feel backwards when that overgrown field is begging to be mowed.

But sometimes the best thing you can do with the bush hog is leave it parked for a few more days.
